India is an over populated country.

Why India is over populated?

Following are the arguments which are given in support of the view that India is an over populated country-

(i) Inadequate increase in Agricultural production: In comparison to growth of population the increase agricultural production, particularly food production was very low during the pre independence period. During the period 1920-21 to 1939-40 when the population increased by 0.83% the agricultural production increased by only 0.20%. Again during 1940-41 to 1949-50 population of India increased by 0.83% but the agricultural production decreases by 0.97% considering the extent of food supply, the presser population in still excessive.

India is an over populated country.

(ii) Occurrence of natural positive checks: In an over populated country occurrence of Malthusian natural positive check are visible where natural ruthlessly wipes out excess population Prof. Amartya Sen observed that since independence India has been successful to overt famines due to democratic set up. But the Neo Malthusian argue that the existence of comparatively higher death rate, higher infantile and materiality, starvation, death and suicide due to poverty, poor medical facilities in backward region and heavy toll of life due to occurrence of epidemics are some factors which can be considered as a sufficient evidence of population in India.

(iii) Poor standard of living: In India the standard of living of general masses (people) is still very poor. The per capita GNP (Gross National Product) in India was only $ 720 in 2005 in comparison to that $ 2640 of middle income economics, the world development report, 2001 made an observation that India is among the poorest countries of the world and excepting a few Asian and African countries.

(iv) Growing number of unemployment: In India, a huge number of working population is being added to the already swollen labour force every years. But the new employment opportunities are not increasing at a higher rate. Thus the unemployment increase every year. As per the latest estimates of the planning commission in March 2005 total number of unemployment in the age group of 15- 60 was about 34.74 million.
