Transboundary pollution is the pollution that originates in one country but can cause damage in another country’s environment by crossing borders through pathways like water or air. Pollution can be transported across thousands of kilometers as the pollution crosses the juris-dictional limit of once country to another, it is known as transboundary pollution.

Kanpur, India polluted the water in Ganga which flows into Bangladesh. Huge river water pollution destroys the water ecology of Bangladesh. Similarly West Bangle, India pollutes the water of churni or Ichhamati, the river water flows to Bangladesh and river pollution kill fish and other aquatic life in Bangladesh.

The river water pollution originates in India. But it affects the environmental ecology in Bangladesh. This is called transboundary or transnational externalities.

Policy option to combat transboundary pollution

It is not very easy to combat transboundary pollution. The social science provides following measures to control transboundary pollution.

(i) One of the most important ways to control transboundary pollution is the implementation of international environment policies or agreements. As for example- river water dispute between India and Pakistan.
